4 speed box jumps out of first gear

Hello to all,
Just came across your forum when googleing my gearbox problem, I couldn't find any answers already listed so maybe someone can help?
4 speed box on 1982 2.0L Aircooled transporter jumps out of first gear when I release accelerator, stays in when I hold it most of the time. All other gears are fine. Could it be linkage? front gearbox mount? or inside gear box?
Any clue would be great

gear stick/linkage worn
engine /gearbox mounts worn
gearbox worn

you need to get down and dirty . strip / clean the linkage , check the mountings replacing anything worn , then a gearbox rebuild if its still doing it.

I've got friend thats going to look at it.
I thought a little investigation might point us in the right direction. Thanks for your help.
Linkage, mounts then box was our plan, but I needed as second opinion (hoping for a common fault with quick fix) :D
Thanks for your gearbox offer - surpose we will wait and see......

the 2.0 dk box is a tuff old box

the linkage can wear , but i have known these vans to work smoothly with a well worn linkage.

chances are its the box

but start with the obvious

the ball on the gearbox selector is also common , drop the linkage at the box , check for wera.

the pin with the 19mm nut should have a nylon guide/washer - commonly missing.the pin should be dead straight and the white balls fixed to the shaft.

once you get down there all the above will make sense!
