fuel tank expantion tanks

Dose any one know what the idea of the 2 fuel expansion tanks in the front wheel arches are for? Only im pretty sure the fuel hoses have cracked and fallen off .. or I have a big rusty hole in my fuel tank. I am thinking of dropping the tank and blanking off the expansion feeds. Would this cause any problems?

The exansion tanks are there for a reason and the clue is in the name
If they are broken source replacements.
It's a good idea to drop the tank and replace all of the fuel hoses and grommets (if necessary) and check the integrity of the filler neck and tank
While you are there check the handbrake cabe and the brake/clutch pipes that run over the tank
