Havin some problems with my van, merrily driving v=back from scotland last week when i noticed that i was filling the scottish borders with large quantities of bluey white smoke, after further investigation its also fowling one of its spark plugs, now to me (and the friendly RAC guy) this looks like a nakered piston ring, my question is, is it gonna be just that or is it possipble its something more insidious? answers on the back of a postcard, also im thinking of replacing the pistn rings myself, any advise, tips or specialist tools needed for this undertaking? incidently engine is a 1980, 2l Aircooled

Over and above a full and comprehensive tool kit........Torque wrench/Piston ring clamp/Glaze buster/Cylinder bore gauge/Feeler gauges/Engineers straight edge.
It depends on whether you want to properly check bores/rings/gaps/heads/barrels etc.
