No thingies when I took the head off?? + 1.6d 1.7d dillema

Right the head gasket had 100% gone on the van (1.6d or 1.7?) even tho the head looks fairly new. So before i just throw it and chuck a 1.9 in there i thought mayb someone had put it back together wrong maybe. It was only running on 3 and i knew the problem was around no4 from indivdualy cracking off the injectors. Anyways the head came off nice and easy including the exh nuts! As i got the last 2 head bolts out, the head just slid back and rested on the exh manifold?? Now the only head ive done on a car before was a 300tdi discovery headgasket and new head on that and on quad engine heads theres always been little guide bits that sit in the holes the bolts drop thro? Not shaw what there called? Well the van didnt have these so im thinking this is why the gasket is mullered as theres nothing to hold the head and gasket in the precise place?? I may be completly wrong and they may not exsist in this engine? Or could who ever put the head on completely forget about them.
I bought the van with the running issue.
Also the log book says 1.6 and on the block it says 1.7??
If anyone could shed any light on the above that would be cool.
Cheers callum

Also the headgasket was buggered between cyclinder, water and oil ports.

Hello,
afaik there's normally one circular hollow stud that's sprung, and protrudes from the block in the middle at the largest whole on the gasket, manifold side - other than that it's the head bolts that hold it in place.

Maybe someone didn't retorque it after the stated interval after the new one was fitted?

I see. I thought there must be something to sort of hold the gasket in place while the head is refited. I will have another look tomorow.
Would be a result if a new gasket solved it!

From Bentley:
Install guide pins from tool set 3070
install gasket
install head + other 8 bolts and tighten by hand
remove guide pins with tool and install other 2 bolts....
......
etc.
Retorque head after 1000 miles.

Hmm those bentley manuals sound good. Shame justkampers want £60 for one!!!
So i had a look today and from wat i can see the engine code starts with a K the rest i culdnt make out so im pretty sure its a 1.7.
Whats the crack with the 1.7?? Mostly the same as the 1.6?? Are they as good?? Why did they make it.... I didnt even kno vw did a 1.7!! And why is the headgasket double the price of the 1.6??
Oh and another thing.... If the previous owner believed it to be a 1.6 as per log book and brought a new head for a 1.6?? Are they similar that it would go on and work but not be right? Just a thought?
Cheers
Sorry if these are silly questions

The 1.7 KY engine is a great engine. Awesome MPG and a fair bit pokier than the 1.6. Generally fitted on later vans i think - but never very popular because you could also get the pokier 1.6TD engine too.
I dont know if the head gasket is different - but the KY engine is a standard engine fitted to T25's so it will be easy to phone VW up and find out!
I'd change the head gasket and try your luck - when they are going well they can return 40MPG which is quite amazing.
Good luck,
Ringo

Right i have check all part numbers....
Engine is a ky 1.7d
The gasket that came out seem to not have enough water holes to allow the water to flow thro. Ive looked at a picture on brickwerks of the 1.7 gasket and the one i have is different! Looks more like a 1.6 gasket.
The head itself is a AMC but none of the numbers on it match up to the numbers in the above thread/link given by Oldiebut goodie?? Infact they match up with nothin atal on the web. Search all numbers thro google but nothing!
The holes all match up on to the block ie water and oil except one water. It matches up more than the gasket does.
So im not rele sure what to do?spend £50 and try it with a new gasket?
If a 1.6d head is different enough to not be able to actually fit then il go with the one i have being the right one. But if it can be fitted and work but then creates problems then im completely wasting my time if i cant find a definete answer without matching AMC part no.
Just my luck to get a van with an engine That hardly anyone has any info on
???????

Do all the holes in the block bar that one match up with the head though? If they do it would appear that it is the correct 1.7 head.
You may be lucky in that all you need is the new (correct) gasket.
(vwheritage have got a 1.7 gasket on ebay that you could use as a double check of the holes)
