Auto gearbox failing - advice for a friend please :-)

So my mate has an L reg transporter 7 seat with an automatic gearbox which is on it's way out.

They've spent heaps on the van and would prefer to keep her but have no idea cost/effort involved in replacing the gearbox. They're considering throwing in the towel which is a huge shame.

Any advice/guidance gratefully received - they're in Cornwall and would need someone to do the work for them.

Thanks
Sarah

factory vw exchange box for a 1991 MY T4 is £2.5k plus vat, I'd figure £600+ for fitting and new clutch etc..
