1.9dg.

Is there a step by step guide for changing the front wheel bearing anywhere?
I've looked on Wiki but cannot find anything.
Do I need any special tools or can i do it with a standard toolkit?

Thanks

remove wheel, caliper, pad carrier if later type brakes, remove grease cap from centre of disc, undo nut, slide disc off stub axle. remove bearing then us a punch to tap the bearing races out. Then do the opposite to build it all back. No special tools needed but fit qaulity bearing not gsf chocolate ones or you will get very familiar with doing the job. about 45 mins a side with a little break in the middle for tea and a fag :ok

So the bearings don't have to be pressed in then?

No, tapped in ... usually with something softer than the outer races your tapping in. I have a brass bar I use.

NB Rears can be pressed into their housing although a vice and suitable drift (or socket) can be used.

Interference fit (the bearing races being slightly larger in diameter than the machined recess in the discs)
All you need to fit them is a medium hammer (1.5 Ib) and a good round punch.
Don't forget the LM High melting point grease to pack the bearing with.
And lastly
Do not tighten (load) taper roller bearings....they need clearance for expansion (typically there will a few millimeters of play ie: when the wheels are re-fitted and push/pulled at 12 and 6 O'clock)

Thanks folks - sound simple............or have i missed something?
This is the man who just nailed down a loose floor board and went straight through a central heating pipe - TWICE!

I've done exactly the same thing myself....had to drain off the complete central heating system before cutting out the holed section and replacing it with a joint  ...

The bearing races can be dificult to 'start off' just remember to keep them 'square' to the hub and tap around the edge evenly....try not to mark the bearing face. The 'TONE' changes as the race hits it's stop position.
Pack both bearings before fitting (drag grease into the wide side of the bearing until it starts ousing out the other side)

I have an issue as the disc wont come off and the bearing is mashed inside, tried prising with a bar and using a rubber mallet but nothing is moving off the stub axle. any suggestions are welcome.

so the bearing has got that hot it has welded it self to the hub?
sounds like you may be needing a new stub axle as well.
big hammer lots and swearing , big chisel. Thats how I get corsa rears off when the same thing happens.
