just put a 1600 ac recon engine in my van . we've got a good spark, it's cranking, the carb is getting fuel but there's no bang. it appears that there is no petrol getting through. float chamber full, fuel pump good, new plugs, leads, dissy cap etc please help
regards
Andy

leads are set up correctly. we were told timing needs to be set when the engine is running

we can only presume the choke's working properly. if the choke is not working would this prevent the fuel entering the inlet manifold? thanks in advance. sorry about the multiple messages

Static timing should be close enough to get it going
No 1 ATDC firing stroke (both valves closed) distributor should be on No1 lead
have you tipped an egg cup of fuel into the carb as you crank it?

i've poured some fuel in and even tried squirting carb cleaner directly in to it.we've been cranking it and manually adjusting advance/ retard....no joy

Should start on the smell of an oily rag. Are you positive you're actually getting a spark? Be absolutely sure right leads going to right cylinders or it won't play.

cheers. definitely getting a spark; that's the most frustrating thing.the beast should fire up. the leads are set up right...we think. gonna try taking the head off and making sure the firing order is right

You don't need to take the head off to do that!... just the rocker cover
Like I said 1-4-3-2 get No 1 ATDC with both valves closed then check rotor arm is pointing to No1

location in your profile may help.
if your in gloucester i could pop over!
poss stale fuel.
if your vans not run for at least a month i would make sure you try fresh fuel.
new fuel and tip about a cap full down the carb , if it dosent go bang and take your eybrows off then its not fuel.
also try a different set of plugs.
i have know of fuel to go off in a couple of weeks and appears good except it wont ignite when in the engine.
also know plugs to show a spark when out of the engine , but dont work when in the engine.
also make sure your valves/ tappets are set correctly

Billy is right, modern petrol starts to go off within 2 weeks. If you've not put brand new petrol in, you've no chance.
If I don't put 'Fuel-fit' in my lawnmower, I would have to drain all the petrol out before trying to start it again the following season.
Same principle with car engines.

Hello,
I'll give you 5 to 2 that you've got the timing 180 degrees out.
Have you got hall ignition (electronic bits hung on the left hand side of the engine compartment)
Is it a 1600 CT engine.
Have you marked the timing notch on the turbine with tippex.
Just for fun:
