1.9 DG: Tappet problem?

Any thoughts on this one? I've just given the engine an oil change, as part of a service.
The original oil filter was an oddball make that I've never heard of, so I fitted one from Brickwerks. The oil used is the blue bottle mineral oil, from Halfords, so all's well.
But, I'm now getting a quite noisy tappet when the engines cold, and it gets a bit better once fully warmed up, after a good run but doesn't go away. The noise wasn't there before, so what might have gone wrong? I ran the engine up to full temp.before draining the old oil out - that itself was fairly clean - and have refilled it correctly with the right amount.
Any ideas people?

So a good run out didn't quieten it down.... hmmm
It may just be coincidence, but let's not get the jitters yet.
The oil hole that the tappet uses to pressurise itself is very small.
ran the engine up to full temp.before draining the old oil out
which made the oil very thin, draining the oil will expose the hole as the tappet gallery empties.
The tappet probably leaked down a lot... more than usual.
drive it some more, your doing no damage as yet.
Did you fill the filter with oil prior to fitting?

Thanks Kev.
I was always taught to get the engine nice and hot prior to draining down so that all the oil comes out so maybe thats why its now noisy; as you say, it's drained everything out
I did fill the filter first too; I know that can give problems. So do you reckon then that its not doing any harm to the lifters while its noisy? I was a little worried that I'd be doing harm to the engine

If it's still noisy after a half hour drive, then we'll talk about hydraulic tappets some more, mean time here's some light reading.
click me
As it was quiet before the change I suspect this may not be too serious

I tend to agree .... in fact I'll wager it's a 'one day wonder' where you go to start it one day and it's magically gone. It's what separates the wbxer from soul-less tractors

Thanks Gents
I've read through the link article and am now more hopeful.
I cant do anything on the van now until Sunday, so I'll see what happens after I've fitted the rest of the service stuff I've bought. As you all say, hopefully, it was just a brief worry, bless it

Lazy tappets can clear as if by magic... BUT.. short runs and starting and running for a few mins always seems to make them leak down..

I finished work sooner than expected so took another look at the engine as I had some new spark plugs to fit too.
When starting it up from stone cold, I could hear the noisy tappet again though after turning the van round to give more room at the front to do another job - see new thread on that - the tappet became quiet. Now, the engine was only running for several minutes at the most so its hardly warmed up, but its ok now!
I'll give it a better run tomorrow and see how it is. Dont you just love 'em

Ive got a new recon engine 1.9DG thats just finished its 500 mile run in the people that supplyed it and the guy who commishioned it say that the rattly tappet will go away. I dont have any expereance with recon engines, A'm i worrying to much about the tappet will it just stop makeing the horible noise? The engine is on the second oil change and apart from the tappet the engine is briliant.

Well, I managed to spend some time on it and drove it around some private land [no Mot at the mo] and the noise hasn't come back, so it must have been as the others have said - thank you both
Like you, I was worried as the noise was a new one and my van also has a recent engine in it too so the last thing I needed was to see it go to pot.
It's going in for an MOT, hopefully this week so that I can get along to the Kent meet, so I can give it a decent run after all the renovation work done to it over the summer.
Doug.
