Dodgy Dipstick

Hi there,

Wondering about the dipstick on my KY engine. I just replaced one KY engine with another and used various parts, including the dipstick from the old jobbie. It seems the dipstick is no longer registering anything, though I know it currently contains the correct amount of oil (4L without filter). Would there be any difference from one 1.7 to another in dipstick length? I am going to pull it out tomorrow to confirm that it wasn't installed a bit dodgy, but wanted to make sure I'm not fishing with the wrong pole as well. If it were installed correctly and just low on oil, it would have to be well low (1.5L +) to not show anything, right?? The guys that put it in are questionable at best, so I suppose I'm lucky they remembered the dipstick at all but...

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

Engine cold.

Wipe dipstick test mark level with chalk.

Run engine, warm,

Drain oil

Measure into container

Allow for 1/2 litre filter

Refill engine

Recheck dip stick .

If no movement

Mark level with file.

Allow + or - 0.2 litres on top ups.

Cordialement

Hi...thanks for the reply. This is what I did and the problem is that nothing is showing on the dipstick after refill! 4 L in, 4 out but barely a speck on the very tip of the stick. I'd mark it there, but I wouldn't then know the difference between a half liter down and 3 liters down. Shall pull the whole thing-a-ma-jigger out maƱana and see what's up. Counting on the schmucks having put it in half arsed...
Just wanted to make sure there weren't generations of this engine that used varying lengths of dipsticks. Thanks again.
