rock and roll rear folding seats.. Alternatives?

Does anyone have any suggestions for fold flat rear seats that are not the normal R&R solution? I am keen to have some comfy rear seats with belts rather than just a bit of foam, but with the flexibility for flatbed.

I think the reason no one has rushed to answer this one is that whatever you do, it will require a fair bit of cutting and welding if you don't want to go down the usual rock n roll bed solutions. However, you could look at some of the Japanese people-carrier type vehicles (of which there are many) and see if any fittings from those might suit with some modifications. It depends what width you need as that will dictate (to some extent) what is available out there.

Some while back I came up with a more substantial DIY rear seat which could (I would think) be adapted to take the base and back from a production vehicle but as I say, theres a lot of work involved in adapting an unknown. You just have to try basically and deal with any problems as you go. Measurements and drawings help no end I found.

I'm in the same boat, and don't like those foam based beds, so what Im doing is holding out for an OEM second hand R&R Bed/Bench seat that matches my interior trim, which is blue/grey.

Failing that if I manage to find one with a different trim, I maybe tempted to remove the trim from my existing 3 seater and replace the none matching trim with it.

I wonder what's under the dull vw upholstery?.....hmmm could it be foam? :rollin

Rather than draw a pension before a vw bed turned up I opted for a new bluebird bed and eventually I will get the foam upholstered to a better standard than VW ever did and the cushions will be permanently fixed to the bed.

It will cost me hundreds less and I will be safe in the knowledge I am not lying in anyone elses dried 'acciddents' :rofl

Good call, but looking at my rearest bench seat, it looks like its never been used in its life, its like new, so would love to be able to convert it into a R&R bed if its not too difficult. I have now access to a welder, so could fabricate it I guess.

If you are talking about a three quarter width rear seat then have a look at the rear seat in a Suzuki G Wagon. Split Folds completely flat and I'm sure would be a fairly simple fitment. I bought one a few months ago from my local car breakers for £10 but have'nt got round to fitting it yet. It is even a pretty close match to my original upholstery.

Best of luck.
