Hello All, I have a sticky hydraulic tappet, goes quiet eventually after about 1/2 hour running.what I want to know is, can I remove the tappet without removing the head? I was hoping to remove the tappet by removing the rocker shaft and pushrod and put a magnet down the tube to remove it. the question is, is the tappet too big to come out through the push rod tube? I await your replies. Thanks

Replace the pushrod tube with a telescopic tube.

My push rod tubes look like they have rings on the outside at the end near the block, does that make them telescopic?

Hello,
Drain engine oil
Rocker box off,
Rocker bars off, don't get them mixed up
Remove wongly spring (if fitted)
Pull out push-rod.
Twist and pull out push-rod tube
Pull out tappet, (might work with magnet, I use a pair of circlip pliers (opening out)
Watch the first part of my video for how to do tappets:

Replace tappet
Replace rubber seals under rocker arms.
Might as well replace push-rod oil seals (please use VW quality)
Job done.
Cordialement,

Cordialement,

Err.. Sorry... thats for a type 4 engine.. Waterboxers cannot be done like that I am afraid.. WBX are same as type 1 design..
Filling the tappets is a fidley and messy task.. as the vid shows..
Do make sure you seat the pushrods in the tappet correctly when installing the rocker assy back on and adjust the preload for each cyl at TDC to half a turn from just touching..
