ok the westy`s have loads of insulation stuffed in the viods. you cant get to the voids with a 16" as there plated over. what do folks do. live without the insulation? cut out the plates?

Dont think it really makes much difference, i put loads of insulation in my 2WD, can't say it made any real difference. Double glazing made the biggest change.
Saying that though, the guy who fitted a new rear wing to my 16", pulled a load of factory insulation out of my rear quarters ( that sounds kinda kinky ). From memory i had one plate missing, which is how i guess westfalia got it in?

I've no idea what people do cos I was able to get to my panels (14") to get kingspan in (makes loads of difference), but I guess you could drill a couple of holes and fill the voids with polystyrene pellets like the stuff they use in cavity walls. I'd want to waxoyl or line it with something first though in case they held the condensation in there.

Why not ring up your local council or energy company? - if you tell them you're on benefits and live in your van you might even get it done for free

Presumably the plates are important for added body strength so you wouldn't want to remove them - otherwise why are they there?

well thats the point really taking out all the strengthers really defeats the point of having a 16" so i dont really want to hack them out. saying that i think the insulation does make a huge difference, not only to the warmth but the general feel of the vans are better with the insulation.

I seem to remember that you can reach behind the closed panels OK along the top.

On a frosty morning you can see where the insulation is missing as the frost melts first.



I can remember spaying the inside of the lower closed panel next to the floor with dinitrol, through holes VW have made for clips and things but I cant remember if the insulation got that far.
