if it's a seat that has been caught in time then repair it - it'll be fine... IF the seat is looser you've left it too long and the valve/seat are burnt then it would be best with a replacement

Depends what engine ? Aircold is much easier to take a head off than watercooled ... can't comment on oil burners.

Well if you have done all the tests to confirm it's a valve issue then as I see it you have two choices.
1. Removal of the head to confirm and replace/repair
if your head comes of without drama then this is the best choice
OR if you snap a head stud removing it then..
2. replacement engine

I've read this a few times now - is it really that terminal when a stud shears?

Well you can try to remove the broken stud...and this invariably ends in tears as it's a pig to get to if it's broken low down in the water jacket,
then you can try too get it removed by a mechanic, and this costs money and tears.
It's not
just taking the head off,
it's the baggage it generates taking it off
In the mean time you can get a 1.9 DG replacement engine for less than £400 fit it , then fix up the old engine at your leisure busted stud or not... then sell it or refit it
I use heat to remove stud nuts.... lots of red heat
but if the stud is buggered you'll still have to remove it

A chum is having great results with welding onto snapped off exhaust studs (he got all the grim snapped off ones out of my spare DJ

) and is starting practising with head studs.

Good news Ian
It seems that this is the best way of taking them on.
