do not have a 'proper' one but have a bosch orbital sander with variable speed and velcro on the pad, would it be any good to use on the roof of the van as I have a patch that is looking 'flat' and even polishing by hand does not seem to last five minutes, looking at the prices of a dedicated polisher is out of the question what with christmas and a trip to oz in the new year

I have one of the bosch ones too... theres a switch on mine that locks it into forced rotation as well as orbital action.
Tried it with a bit of rubbing compound once and found it pretty useless.

Try looking on eBay; I got a decent one from there, complete with a new foam mop head, for £48.00 [the mop itself is about a tenner so I thought this was a bargain] make sure you dont buy a similar looking angle grinder thats got a mop head fitted to it, they are waaaaaaaaaaaay to fast and will burn the paint
