Just pulled the box out of my pug converted camper. Torque converter is bust due to engine misalignment probably, can't get the torque converter off the gearbox. I just gently pulled it and this shaft came out with it and I can't get it detached from it. I haven't wacked it with a hammer yet as I didn't think this would be necessary.

What is this shaft and should it even be able to come out like this. Am I going to have to detach the box to reinstall it?

The shaft is the drive shaft that goes from the TC to the box. It does slide out of the box and will go back in no probs, just need to make sure it is properly seated.

The slightly more worrying bit is not being able to get it off the TC, it should just pull off. It is fitted on splines so may be worth soaking overnight in a releasing fluid, unless the TC has come loose on the flex plate and it has twisted the splines?

Does it come all the way out? I have pulled it most of the way but it is trapped behind something. Maybe the TC seal?

Here is a pic of the broken TC. Is it repairable in this state? Otherwise I can try and use something more solid to try and get it off the shaft.

Generally TC's are an exchange item, not sure if this would be repairable or not TBH. In your original post you said TC was broken poss due to engine misalignment.

If this were the case I would suspect the drive/pump shaft is somehow twisted/wedged in the TC. On reassembly this shaft must be absolutely straight as it rotates at high speed and will cause vibration/destroy the bearings where it runs into the tranny.

If you are going to source a replacement TC, may be worth taking the TC and shaft to a transmission specialist and getting their advise/test the shaft for straightness.

Also would be concerned what had caused the problem in the first place, in theory if the engine is bolted up correctly to the bellhousing how could it be mis-aligned?

Just an update. I gave it some gentle wacks with a rubber tent peg mallet and it came off ok.

Just a quick question ... How can the engine be misaligned ? If the bellhousing is bolted up top and bottom then it's got to be straight.

It will use an adapter plate between the engine (pug) and gearbox
