New engine advice

A piston broke and blew a hole in my engine yesterday (type 25 1.7 diesel engine water cooled). I'm now stuck in Devon and need to get my van back to Bath (UK). Any advice on best way to get my van home (I've been quoted (£260) and how to source a reconditioned engine would be appreciated. I have no idea how much it's going to cost and whether it's worth it but otherwise my van is in good condition (!). Any thoughts onthat would be useful too.

Hi, Sorry to hear of your woes, can't help with getting it home but hope you get sorted quick.
My advice on the engine is to replace with a 1.9 1Y (non-turbo) from a Golf or Caddy van. It's a really easy swap with your KY engine, and all mounts, manifolds etc will swap straight over. You'll love the difference in power and driveability, and it's a nice quick and cheap upgrade.

This engine was fitted in many cars and vans.. and is readily available.
Other engines to consider is the much used AAZ engine

Join the AA or RAC.Explain the situation, I think they'll make you pay the full joining fee but will bring you home.

Thanks for the advice. The AA quoted £475 to go 120 miles! RAC would only provide roadside assistance and a tow to the nearest garage. So there appears to be no cheap way to get the van home

Nevermind, I guess it could be worse. At least it's the end of the summer. We'll probably put the van on the drive for the winter and save up to fix it in t spring. Cheers.
