Fitting replacement door step rubbers

Newbie question again, I have been trying for the last hour to fit these things and getting a little annoyed and I am now beginning to think I am going mad.
The rubber mats have a lip on each of the lugs that needs to clip to the metal holes in the door step. I have tried hitting them gently and hard and pulling them through the holes with pliers and no joy and ut seems to break and pull the rubber lugs. The holes line up so no problem there. Is there an art to this or can a kind soul on here put me out of my misery.
All help appreciated.

Try warming the the rubber mats in hot water to soften them up first.
