Hi guys i have this awfull judder and knocking when setting off in first and also when i go into 2nd. It also does it if i take my foot off the gas and back on again. Feels like the engine going to bounce out. Its done this for a while so i bought some new engine mounts from Brickwerks but it carried on juddering. Could this be a cluth or oil as i have a leak from box buit does not leave oil on floor, also was thinking gearbox mount. Also when i select a gear some times i hear a knock too. any ideas would be gratfull thanks.
Steve

Hi,
Did you ever get to the bottom of the juddering in first ? As mine has started doing this.

Cheers

the bottom of it is gearbox nose mount failure.
..and from my own experience engine mount failure

Hmmm, it can indeed but from recent experience I discovered you can also get these symptoms from the clutch too. I know this because I recently replaced engine and gearbox mounts to get rid of this problem only for it to still be there. It could be down to release operating arm and bearing not moving square to clutch or damage to clutch levers/springs or some kind of contamination in the bellhousing.
I'd certainly replace mounts if they're an unknown, and remember its almost impossible to check their condition without undoing them, but don't be surprised if the problem doesn't remain even with new mounts.
N.B. Less likely but not unheard of is a loose bolt that holds gearbox and engine together.

I had really bad clutch judder so I removed the gear box and had a look
I found that the rear main oil seal was leaking just enough to make the clutch plate greasey
also gearbox mount didn't look to good
so I replaced rear main oil seal gearbox mount and put a new clutch kit in.
Now with these new parts in works lovely

Interesting, I may change all the mounts as not so expensive, however showing my ignorance a bit, what is the rear main oil seal ? I changed my gearbox last year with a second hand one (did not change the clutch as I couldn't afford it, which I realise is a sin) however did not change any or find any oil seals ?

The crankshaft oil seal behind the flywheel

I too have this symptom.
it knocks under load in the following conditions:
accelerating - even gently
going around a roundabout but not a right hand bend
it does not knock when free wheeling down hill out of gear
or
when travelling at a constant speed on the motorway.
I read this post last night and thought i might just try and replace the gearbox mount but VW Heritage sells them for about £100! bit tooo expensive just to try something out!

Fitted one of these and it works a treat. It involves stripping the old bush and it's outer casing out of the mount though (£32.22 less discount) .
