Help identifying things please.

Have been on a magical mystery tour today around the engine stripping off the protection. I am assuming that most parts have been on a while given the amount of rusted bolts etc. and when i did finally drop the main engine protection a 10mm spanner was sitting on it - made in west germany. could have been there years. Does not bode well for a any maintenance history on the van. Oh well. Anyway the engine bay is really filthy and sooty - discovered several things exhaust related - mostly fumes belching from around the manifold area - i think some from the nozzle in the first pic..looks like something should be on the end of it but nothing appeared obviously disconnected?..this pic taken after drivers side (lhd) engine protection removed so up behind the rear wheel
Image
also the pipe that feeds off the oil filler cap...this one
Image
was badly fitted at its other end to what looks like another fatter pipe lower down and they did not look like a natural fit - pipe way to big for the small stubby spigot that stuck out of bigger pipe - sorry for novice style explanation - anyway also fumes pouring from this bad union. I tighten up the jubilee clip but the two parts really felt mismatched you can see them both here unconnected the small stubby one is part of the large black pipe across the bottom of the pic. pic taken from same place as above
Image
this was also rattling around loose down amongst it all in the same area
Image
Anyway the engine looks like it had plenty of oil leaks but thats another story..also found this plug tucked up behind passenger side light cluster when undoing bolts for engine protection...any ideas?

Lots of patience and deep pockets needed i think.

It can only get better  unfortunately the cheaper vans rarely turn into a bargain, but you got a nice rare panel van, shame about the diff lock but hey, you have a spare!
What you said was the oil filler is the oil breather, I can take a pic of mine if you like? At least you can give everything a good clean when the box is out, might as well drop the fuel tank too, and replace the fuel lines (mine had rotted) your tank straps will probably be rotten too ( I had someone do this for me, futbus)
And at least when it all goes back together you'll know it has been done right

First pick is the blow of valve. Nothing connects to it.
Second is not a filler but a breather valve.
Third pick shows damage to main pipe were breather fits.
Next is a heat shield.
And last is the cruise control engine bay wiring. Most late vans had this in the loom.

All good info. Yes Lloyd can you see if you can take a pic of the oil breather pipe (the other end) and i can compare. never thought it was going to be any different , twice as expensive, twice as long....just like building a house really.

Agreed. Yours looks like it just rolled off the assembly line compared to mine. Had a jet wash in there today , made no difference! Anyway do we have a name or part no. For the bigger pipe? I noted it's fitted at one end with the same seals and clips on my tdi passat they are always leaking oil as well.

here's a page with the bits and part numbers http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2SY/1 ... 49/593748/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You might have to register to view. It's a very handy site

If your manifold is cracked, there is one for sale in the for sale section
