Only when turning hard right; nothing when turning hard left, nothing in a straight line.
Replaced complete drive shaft which made no difference.
Putting in a call to Jim'l Fix it before spain on the 23rd

That sounds terrible. Drain and check diff oil? but sounds like CV problem to me.

The frequency of the noise is quite high, higher than the drive shafts turning. I would suspect the diff input shaft bearings, or something spinning at prop speed.
That filmed with a Go Pro? Excellent footage.

Breaking new ground there on the chassis vids Mark, brilliant...
Ugh! Now that noise... have you changed both outer CVJs or just the one on that side?

One thing i don't have any of is time at the moment; so have just gone with a gut feeling and had the garage up the road change the off side drive shaft complete with my only spare. Thought it was the outer cvj st first but from the drivers side seat it sounds more over to the right. Picked up the van after only to be told 'the horrible sound is still there!'
Contour camera and a bit of tape !
Will play around more on sunday but it looks like drain oil, diff out and off to Wales. Just one of the joys of a 225,000km tariff on the van.
Just wondered if anyone who has suffered with a broken front diff would say 'heard that before ... '?

i think that noise is too bad to be diff. would expect the diff to be screaming at you for a long while before it got that bad.

Mal on his syncro had a knackered front ring and pinion, looked like it had been run without oil for a time as there was a low tide mark inside the box. That just howled as lee said, and didnt make much difference if coupled or de-coupled.
I know noises at the front can be hard to pinpoint as Mal's diff the noise sounded like it was coming from the back and was resonating down the prop shaft.
I would drop the prop, and see whats what. At least then you can spin the front wheels around like it's de-coupled and try and find something amiss.
Its not the brake back plates is it, rubbing on the discs, and no judder through the brakes?
The only other thing that has rubbed on the front of mine was a drive shaft on the bottom of the shock. The lower shock mount was knackered and allowed the driveshaft to rub when steering turned and on bumps. It did leave a tell-tale mark on the driveshaft and shock though, so was easy to spot.

I think it's a CV.
Perhaps you changed the wrong drive shaft?

I would go with possible pinion bearing failure casing an overloaded cw/p, either that or diff side bearing total failure. Could be why it's only on turning in one direction? Much movement at the output flanges?
Sounds not dissimilar to mine, which had two chipped pinion teeth and about 1mm end-float in the pinion bearing...it really howled toward the end, I'm embarassed to say.
There were distinctive long "flakes" of hard metal on the plug magnet, from the flanks of the pinion teeth. More than just the usual xmas tree fuzz.
PS it was all in the gearbox, even though from the cab it sounded as though it was coming from the front diff, just over the half bulkhead (to my ears)

jacked the van up and got the front wheels spinning, dead giveaway is one wheel spinning independently of the drive shaft

Looks like the new outer cvj on the other side of the diff is totalled.
Be taking it off Monday.

Yes relieved! took the diff drain plug out as well; very little swarf and good colour oil so pleased about that.
Going to book myself in for a hearing test though; got completely the wrong side
See what tomorrow brings...

Happy to be able to report that the new (old) drive shaft we took off the wrong side has now been placed on the other side and has cured the worryingly loud knocking noises complained of.
Thanks to Clive for coming down Sunday and assisting. Two pairs of eyes/ears is always a bonus with something like this.
Duff CVJ is still encapsulated in its Boot at the moment.
