Gearing ect ect

Right this is kinda thinking aloud. I'm starting to save for a gearbox rebuild, due to wanting some longer gears.
So is there a relatively simple gear calculator to use, that will give you a graph on it, inc showing what rev range you will drop down into when changing gear?( so i can muck around with gearing to see what sort of spread i can get to match the AAZ)
Next is what to do? Keep AAZ and 6.17 final drive, is there gears long enough to give me a good motorway speed? Would like it to be comfortable at 65mph (50mph at the moment) with maybe 10mph in reserve. But i don't want chasms between gears making it an a*** on A and B roads. (can you change every gear 1-4 making all of them longer?)
Next is maybe swap out the 6.17. What is the value of this final drive? If i did this i would then want to TDI it, but maybe selling the 6.17 will cover some of the cost?
Think i'll have to do something in the next year, as driving all day on the red line can't be good for the engine

Think Aidan will be your man for this one. My 5 speed (non syncro :( ) has an extended 5th gear - I get 65-70 on motorways in 5th and no where near the red line.

He will be the man! Don't won't to bother him officially yet (to early on yet) but if he wants to comment......

Changing the gearing on your syncro with an AAZ is a waste of time and money. This engine is to underpowered for another setup. If you up
the power on the AAZ to cope with the gear changes you will find all the other AAZ problems start appearing.
Remember this is a syncro and not a 2WD and as such gives a very different result.

Ah, ok cheers for that. I do still run out of oompf on some hills with aaz so can see where your coming from. I do have a chargecooler to fit, but more for economy/cooler temps than upping boost/fueling.
So best to do it with a tdi upgrade then. How is a tdi with a 6.17? Can you get tall enough gears to make it work.
The box and engine work fine at the moment, so I'm in no rush. But I do like to have a plan

Don't, once or twice it's crossed my mind to sell, then build my own......

Once you've got a proper engine Lloyd  then what you really need is the 4.86's from my 'velle (probably the best bit)
Funny that a little DG can perform adequately even when over geared on big tyres...diesels eh?

PS It'll do 60 at 3200 rpm, just takes a while to get there!

And you will be changing gear every five minutes too

footstuck runs a tdi with 6.16`s think hes got v 2nd, 1.14 3rd and .7 4th. aidan will know as he`s just rebuilt it.

do a lot of research before you do gears as its easy to get it wrong.

Well, it seems if it's worth waiting and fitting a tdi, and sorting the gearing at the same time. A secret savings stash is in the making..... Luckily the wife never opens my chocolate tin  spending some money on the house this year, so will take a bit longer than usual

Come and have a drive in mine when it`s done as it has the 0.7 final drive, altho the diff ratio is different it`ll give you some idea.

Judging by text messages last night one of the Surrey boys will shortly be testing a set up for you, Jakes is the most economical set up engine and gearing, most of the 14" diesels start with 5.43 final drive boxes and we go .70/1.09 on them, Jake's 4.86 .73/1.14
Nick's is .70/1.09 on 6.16 should really only do 65 but he likes the loud pedal and his mech set up runs over 4k rpm at which rate he needs to be doing 80 to get enough air over the turbo to cool it down I reckon it'll be glowing and not long lived
If you decide to change final drive then source a pair of low miles/well maintained boxes
Electronic or mechanical pump is the big q
Electronic AFN with VAGCOM probably best set up imho (and I don't do diesel), they are all a compromise but being able to plug it in is a good thing I reckon
I have a nice gear calculator programme that does graphs just waiting for Clive to make it into an uploadable package and it'll go on the website, nudge :rollin

cheers, i will be going electronic when i get round to doing it. As said would like to do 65mph at a sensible rpm, sounds like it may be possible with my final drive. Look forward to seeing the graph
