First of all apologies if I'm in the wrong section.

After filling up at weekend van lost all power and then wouldn't start. Breakdown were convinced that I'd put wrong fuel in, however having now got it to my local garage turns out I didn't and the pump has failed.

This is an electrical pump that a mobile mechanic convinced me to put in about 5 months ago. My garage say it was low quality. They think going back to a mechanical pump is the best thing to do, but are having trouble sourcing one.
Any help on where I can get one would be much appreciated, vans a 1.9 air-cooled and is mechanical the way to go?

Lastly is it worth chasing the mobile mechanic for some sort of compensation or should I just put it down to (costly) experience.

My T25 had an electrical fuel pump fitted when I purchased it, and the old failed mechanical pump was still in situ with the pipes. I purchased a replacement, and fitted that, and stored the electrical pump in case of emergencies.

Not sure if this is the right one, maybe someone else may know.?

i changed mine from the mechanical to electrical on my 2.0ltr Aircooled when i fitted some dellorto drla 36's. got all my wiring diagrams of the wiki, pump etc from flea bay, make sure you put on a pressure regulator. getting to the mechanical pump is a bit tight for space, so fitted my electric just under the sill, nice and easy to get too. I would chase the mechanic that fitted too.

A good used fuel pump for a 2.0l aircool is a rare thing, and they're not available new. Any second hand one will be a lottery.

If yours is duffed an electric one is the best option, go for a known brand like Facet. I used one from a Kawasaki which I got from Ebay for a fiver, perfect match specs wise for the original.

Wow £5 ..bargain.

There is a mechanical one on flea bay from a closed down VW garage bidding starts at £99.99 could try making an offer but wouldn't have clue on value. Guess if their obsolete it's a sellers market.

I spotted as I was looking in the workshop manual for the Kawasaki that it had about the same specs as the VW pump does, this got me thinking so I used the one from my bike for a test, then used an identical pump and its electronic relay bought from Ebay.
I recommend using the specific relay as it controls the pump so that it isn't running when you don't need it.

My thoughts exactly, if they want £99 for an original then just about any suitable brand name electric pump will be cheaper.
