hello guys. I have a 1.6TD JX with 65A alternator. my alternator belt snapped on the way home last night. I have a couple of spare engine belts that came with the van. the guy reckoned one was for the alternator.

it says its a 600mm belt, and that's what brickwerks say is the right belt for a dual belt system with a 65A altrernator.

Now, the belt that came off is bigger, and looks like it reached from the alternator down to the crank.

Note I also have a water pump belt still currently on the engine so it was dual belt.

The new 600 belt at best would only reach from the water pump pulley to the alternator.

Is this how it goes on? or do I need a larger belt.

im up "pooh" creek without a drive belt and I need to try fit this on!

There are alternative drive belt methods for the water pump&alternater.It looks like your broken belt could be the same as mine as shown on the images but mine being a single belt only for all pulleys & the Halfords part no for it.It looks like you may have this long belt arrangment plus a second belt from the bottom pulley to the water pump .The factory setup for the auxillary belts should be one belt going round the water pump pulley and crank bottom pulley which is adjusted for tension by shims.Then a second belt which i think was the replacement belt 600mm you obtained going round the water pump to the alternater which is adjusted for tension by undoing a 13mm nut on a bracket.The water pump V pulley shares both belts and the shim adjustment is done by adding or removing them on the pulley.As a way round a single belt can be set up to run all the pulleys .

Why don't people just measure round the pulleys - it is so much simpler than all the posts 'what belt fits my setup'?

Yeh I think I had a long belt and short belt at the same time. I'll pop the 600 belt on and cross my twidlers!

measuring around the pulleys wouldn't help me understand the query I had.

If you are going to try&fit the 600 belt you need to undo the bolts on the water pump pulley seen on the image.The pulley will separate and allow you to take the belt off to put on the 600 v belt.When you undo the bolts you will notice the shims& If you decide to replace the bottom pully to water pump belt or use the old one its important to use the shims to get the correct tension.and it can be tricky to refit the belt on it and pulley half trying the shims out to get the right tension as the bolts are re tightened.I hope this makes sense

Yeah that's great thanks mate really helpful. I'll prob change both as I have them. hopefully the shims won't cause me too much tension!

Nice. it all went to plan. same amount of shims (3).

Now, I think what happened is some numpty put a small water pump belt on WITH a single large belt. This likely caused the water pulley to spin faster than the large belt. Which would result in rubbing on the large belt and probably caused the snapage!

anyway despite re-fitting the pulley being a bit of a sod the belts are going round with smiles on their faces thanks for the info!

I'm at work so can't call. but if you explain your situation I'll try best to talk ya through what to do.

Ensure you pull the number plate flap down to get good access to the bolts if you're spliting the water pump pulley.
