cylinder head cracks?

Evening.

Took my van in for a compression test and the mechanic said that there are carbon deposits running up the threads of the spark plugs which indicate cracks in the cylinder heads. Is that right? If so how serious is it?

Thanks in advance.

A compression test will give you a basic indication of what pressure is being produced by each cylinder when the engine is turning over,,,,,,fine if there is a vast difference between each bank of cylinders.

TBH, unless he can demonstrate his findings, he may just be trying to baffle you with bullshyyte..

Now ask your man to carry out a (CLT) Cylinder leakage test, where compressed air is fed into each cylinder via a hollow adapter fitted into the spark plug hole, any percentage losses are indicated by a meter.
Any good Garage should have the equipment to carry out this type of test....
