Dip stick help

Hi there not had my van so long its my first camper, might sound stupid to some, on the dip stick in between the twists there are two notches are the notches max and min or are the twists max snd min

The twists are there to stop the oil level on the dipstick getting smudged as you put it in and remove it

And dont necessarily believe the marks are right, when I add correct amount of oil to my engine on complete change, the oil only comes up to the middle.
