Hi,

Anyone know of a good campsite somewhere in the lakes, preferably by a lake (just for walking along the edge of - no watersports planned), with at least one decent pub nearby (real ale is a must).

We're planning to do a bit of mountain biking and walking - we're only going to be staying for one night. Other commitmnets mean we can't stay any longer.

We have used Coniston Hall before, but that was about 8 years ago and we were in a tiny tent then - no idea if it's still sutable.

Thanks in adbvance for any suggestions - just a thought - it doesn't need to be in the lakes, it could be by the sea.... don't really want to be more than a two hour drive from Leeds West Yorks though.

We've had our van for about 6 weeks now, but as yet we haven't been away overnight - tons of day trips though....

You could try the Low Wray campsite....its National Trust owned and they accept campers but not caravans, no electric hook up though.
Grizedale Forest is close by with a mountain bike trail http://www.forestry.gov.uk/thenorthfacetrail

Minimum is two nights according to the website - still we could just rock up on the day and see what's what...

About 5 minutes walk to Pooley Bridge and it's 3 pubs.

You also have to camp in the carpark as they dont let vehicles on the grass

My favorite campsite in the UK is at Wasdale head (national trust campsite and won the best view in England award) and their is a good one on the banks of lake Coniston (by a marina if you google it)

Grizedale forest is a fantastic place for mountain biking.

The one in coniston Jed mentions is Coniston Hall. You would need ring to check if it's still open in late october

It's right by the lake and a short stroll to the village and it's lovely pubs.....black bull and sun inn (up the hill by the bridge)

Another one is side farm in patterdale. It's a small site, at the foot of place fell on the opposite shore of ullswater to the road, but there are some lovely flat pitches by the lake. There is a pub in patterdale (about 10 mins walk) and another 2 in glenridding (about 25 mins) especially the stop and rest up the hill.

You can get the steamer from glenridding to howtown and follow the lakeshore path right back to the campsite

There is also gillside farm in glenridding but I have never been

Stonethwaite campsite is a back to basics (toilets only) site. It has a river running through it with some very nice walks. Pub is 5 min walk or 20 mins to scarfell hotel. The track leading to the site is rough and tricky but it is a gorgeous place. Might even see you there myself as we are touring 22nd-30th oct. Its £5 per person per night

We spent 10 days there in June / July and loved it. Both Gillside in Genridding and the Wasdale Head site are excellent and the ones we would have suggested if others hadn't got in there first! Gillside is a good start point for Helvellyn and Wasdale for Scafell Pike or Great Gable. No hook up at Wasdale IIRC.

The pub at Wasdale Head is full of Lakeland mountain history and does decent food with good portions.

Glenridding has a variety of places to eat and drink and a kind of posh chip shop / cafe that also does mega portions.

Wasdale head has a few hookups. I prefer to free camp around there

Has the wasdale campsite reopened to vehicles now? I had heard the bridge was needing repairing, so no vehicles could enter the site?

I can recommend Fallbarrow in the centre of Bowness, just returned last night. It's on the banks of Lake Windermere ideally situated for everything.
Tel 015395 69835. We have also stayed at a few sites in Troutbeck on the A66, opposite Blencathra, a bit less commercial.
