Hi, the work on the Komet is about to start in a few weeks, i need to remove the rubber cab mat and get rid of the carpet which is covering as it has seen better days. am wanting to remove the sticky stuff which kept the original carpet down, can anyone suggest something? Darren

Talking of cab mats / carpets...

My "temporary" Caravelle has very nice fitted carpets in the front that go right up and cover the area of the top of the wheel arches that always get dinged by the seat belt thingy.

Our "real" van is away having a full body resto.
It currently has rubber front "carpet" with mats = not very posh or sound deadening.

I was wondering if it is possible to buy these Caravelle "deluxe" style full front carpets ?

One of the first jobs I did to my Komet when I bought it. I VERY carefully removed the mats (they rip easily) and slowly tore the carpet away which just left the glue on the rubber. I removed the adhesive by brushing a small area of about a foot square with Nitromores, waiting about a minute or so and then brushing off dissolved glue with very soapy hot water. Glue sticks to bristles but just falls off into the water. Repeated till entire mats were done. The Nitromes did temporarily 'soften' the rubber but did not dissolve it. Leaves a nice clean but matt black rubber mat. Brush entire mat with old fashined black shoe polish and leave for about an hour and brush off to leave a high gloss rubber finish.

I removed the whole lot out of the van, pulled as much of the old carpet as I could which left lots of the foam backind behind, then tried my wifes hair drier on it ,very slow work, then I tried a power washer, used at an angle to the mat and it worked a treat, great sheets of it just came off,the only problem was someone had used super glue at sometime to stick the edges down and the power washer wont touch that so I have small shiny bits but the mat looked brand new when finished, was well chuffed with it,gordon :ok

just do it ypur self. the pre made carpets cost a fortune and dont fit properly anyway. you just have to be methodical and take your time. this cost me about £30 and a bad back.

Very nice indeed - was my plan to do the same (using the same material as the roof), I just wonder how hard wearing it will be.

it is an edging bead for a pop top roof. just opened it up, didnt glue the carpet all the way to the edge and the hammeres it over. you can buy it per metre from most trim places. just make sure you dont glue all the way to the edges so you can get it right under. :ok

Whilst we are talking about the carpets, rubber or self replaced, I noticed under my rubber mats there is OEM type floor hard type insulation which is cracked here and there. This is the same paint colour as the metal, and is about 5mm thick stuff, and stuck down solid.

My question is, is it worth removing this stuff, or leave it be?
