It's got have had a fair bit to do with the 959 surely, all Porsche's 4x4 R&D was going on at that point. Even the 959 was a heavily modified 911 underneath wasnt it?
Here it is again...

The 953 was indeed the forerunner of the 959. The factory built just 3 to prove the concept, using the pressures of motorsport to drive the project along.
The 4x4 transmission was a modified 5-speed + R + G
I remember reading about these when it was all hot news, probably in "Classic and Sportscar" while waiting for the dentist as a youth. I lifted the magazine, obviously

I found the white mudflaps on these a bit low for my liking!
Talking about dentists, a Tommy Cooper joke:
I went to the dentist the other day; terrible tragedy that Titanic!

Having a chat with another Porsche fanatic the other day, Francis Tuthill, big cheese in the Classic Rally circles. Just back from a Caribbean Rally & off soon to Africa with 10 classic 911's. Its another world that millionaires can't afford, but does look like a whole load fun.
If you fancied ago, they offer taster courses on the cheap.................

Yeah, that would be right, they were into VW in a big way in the 80's. Still do abit for people they know. They started specializing in Porsche in the early 90's. Good choice!
Pic....I don't know to be honest, its off their site.
