I have had my Caravelle for a few months and have made several improvements. I have now decided to drop the tank to fix the diesel leak and replace the very rotten straps. Whilst doing this I will be thoroughly cleaning and using the Dinitrol system.

Took about 6 or 7 hours to get the tank out. What a pain in the bum. I am not looking forward to shoe horning it back in.

The last time I took it off road was at Slab Common. On the way home I stopped off at a Texaco garage to make use of their jetwash. I thought I had done a pretty good job....









One strap had already snapped and the other was about as strong as tinfoil. Completely beyond welding. I see Brickwerks do them in stainless, which seems a little bit over the top/expensive. The originals have lasted 20 years. Is there anywhere else I can get them from?

I managed to snap the very end off of one the breather spouts. Can this be super glued or can it be replaced?

Under side of van is now clean. A combination of scraping, brushing, hoovering and jet washing. Very, very little rust. I will give it a couple of days to dry and then apply coatings.

Other thing that have come to light.

Front of gear box weeping from gasket
Water leak from pipe near engine bay - caused by extraction of tank.
Rear shock not returning.

I'll put up a few more pics up as I go.

the spigots/breather vents were available new from vw when i did mine for around a £10-£15 each, i am assuming that there is no difference between petrol and diesle ones, i snaped both of mine trying to get the breather hoses off of, i would replace them as they cant be got at once the tank is back in.

I was looking at doing stainless straps when next time work needs doing with either engine or box. Typically the engine goes breasticles up and i`d just filled up with £85 of diesel, and cant be arsed to drain it all out. Next time me thinks.

I was prepared with 25 litres of storage but only just over a litre was left in the tank.

Jed, is it now an AAZ?

Stainless straps now order.

Watching with interest mate, and good on you for taking this task on, as its something many of us Syncro owners will need to do at some point, myself included, so your photos and others, plus info, and advice do come in very handy for reference.

Does anyone have part number for the breather spiggots on the top of the tank please?

Four left in stock and two of those are mine. Be quick if you want them.

This may be of help to others.

Replacing the hoses is proving more difficult than removing the tank!

Snapped both float valves but they are now in the post. Should have them Friday.

Also snapped the 8-6mm reducing non return valve. Can't get it from VW as none of the diagrams have it, so no part number. Only current option is to use an 8mm valve followed by a reducer. Is this part really needed?

I don't have a scanner!!



I don't understand why the feed from the bottom of tank is 12mm but 120mm reduces to 8mm and continues to filter?
