New owner of a 1.6 Aircooled has problems

Hi. I am not a mechanically minded person but every time I get my van back from the garage I seem to inherit another problem.
I have a T25 1.6 Aircooled petrol van.
1. I had a lot of back firing - garage fixed it with a complete carburetor rebuild - seem to work now it gives off a real big pop plus black smoke then it clears?
2. During this the whole engine seems to jerk almost to the point of closing down. Maybe a fuel block or sludge passing. I call it the Kangaroo!
3. If I have to stop really quickly or even come down the gears on approaching a junction the engine seems to stall, electrics and all. If I slow down gradually it seems to be OK - mostly!
4. Sometimes after a long ride, slowing down to a stop but in gear (1st) the engine will keep revving as if it is still fourth. This doesn't happen all the time though.
Please can someone come up with some answers. The garage I use seems to be the only VW van one in the area.
Thanks

I hope you have not removed the electronic ignition?
You need to check the following things..
find and fix any induction leaks, from the vacuum hoses, servo hose, gaskets, carburettor butterfly,
That the timing is correctly set for a CT 1.6 Aircooled engine.
once these are correct.. then check the mixture on a gas analyser.

Hello,.
Stop sending
IT to the garage.
They do have names you know....
Get a Haynes, and a basic of tools.....
Learn to do it yourself, I think commonly known as DIY
Its a VW thing.
I'll help you all I can with your 'oppressed minority' engine,
Cordialement

and seeing all the big fast cars full of folk in an almighty rush to nowhere fills you with joy and warms you hence compensating for the lack of heat,,,
as to the O/P, Im suprised that you go fast enough to need to slow throgh the gears.
sorry not much use but its the way here,

Thanks a lot guys for the comments and help. Haynes I have but not a mechanical head - I'll probably end up wrecking it.
After the Carb rebuild she 'Matilda' does quite good at 70mph! - down hill with the wind behind her

Hello,
Do you have the original electronic (ish) ignition, easily recognised by the black box and aluminium amplifier/heat sink gracefully hung on the left hand wall of the engine bay.

with all the original wiring.
Is the engine clean, I mean really clean, tinware, engine bay etc.
Are all your fabric covered rubber hoses in good condition.
This should be within the realms of a non mechanically minded person.
Photos will help,
If you can get 70 mph out of 'her', don't complain and get a 'Guinness book of records application form'
Listed top speed = 103 kph. Mine in full tune 113 kph.
Cordialement,

Cheers. I've got a bag of tools from my Mini days and I'll get the Haynes out this weekend. I'll post photos if it'll help. Thanks

Hi. Don't see the relevance (Midlothian) unless you are volunteering to come around and fix it for free

Yes clearly I do have a sense of humour. Take it as read that I do appreciate all the help but am new to this site with my van.

I have experienced 'Mini' nutters

from other sites in the past so I am always wary, but don't take it personally
