skittish handling

evenin all,

noticing that when i drive over a pot hole or even deep manhole cover, there seems to be a definate sideways movement of the wheels which seems independent of the steering wheel

replaced the track rod ends, which were knackered, but that still has not cured it

was wondering if anyone can suggest the next areas and order of investigation

Did you get the tracking checked when you replaced the track rod ends? If not you should do, bet that cures it

Is your anti roll bar and associated drop links all in good order?....early drop links are prone to snapping.

had a look today and the big rubbers on roll bar ends have got loads of cracking on them, as have all the other ball joint rubbers, bottom, top, the whole lot look as if they have had their best days

so it look as if a steady re-newall of all joints is needed

the words handling and t25 should never be in the same sentence unless it begins with 'no'

part of the charm i think.

I agree....^^^^^....Also look at the shock absorbers, often they appear quite dry but have lost much of their damping effect over 25 years, so allow the wheels to bounce instead of remaining in contact with the road.

So he had the fault before and after....
You are right of course, the tracking should be set after replacing the track rod ends, infact the geometry in general with a fault like this.
But before any money is spent on adjustments the basic mechanical condition of steering and suspension needs thoroughly checking..things like:
Steering rack mounts
Steering rack couplings
Ball joints and wishbone rubbers
Shock absorbers
Wheel bearing play
Tyres (and pressures)
All metalastic type bushings
Antirollbar bushes and drop links
No point in spending money on adjustments with worn out components making things flop about.
