CT head gasket gone

Hi guys,

Think one of my head gaskets gone on my 1600 a/c CT (lost compression, oil everywhere, back firing, starts but wont idle).

Can anyone point me towards a new head gasket? I've looked on JK and a few other sites but can't seem to see one for my engine :?

Also would like suggestions on other things that would be recommended to change while i have the engine out and in bits. Is it worth changing the other sides head gasket at the same time?

Already gotta repalce the oil cooler, manifold, rethread some exhaust studs and planning on the push rod tube seals as i think they leaking oil. Anything else worth doing?

Cheers,
Tysoe

Hello,

I'll answer your thread later, as its tea time, but basically VW aircooleds don't have gaskets for the cylinder heads

Cordialement,

as said you don't have them as such
lost compression is due to Burnt valves and or piston ring wear.
back firing is an air leak, weak mixture, low compression and or poor timing.

Hello again,

Thanks Kev, quite right, followed by excellent home made pear tart made by our VW guests Ollie and Emma :)

Right, as it happens, I'm doing one of these right now, and its being filmed.

I've done several CT 1600 videos, including head off and so on but they're a bit scattered.

( perhaps an admin person can help) on You tube and Vimeo, and on the forum.

I'm off this weekend motor racing, :)

but will do the build up next week and hopefully film.

Meanwhile get a Haynes and your workshop sorted, find the engine removal 1600 ct video.

Cordialement,

:ok

Hello,

Pears, do the same as apples,

Pick them from the top, (sunniest side) when the windfalls have dropped.

Store them in cellar in wooden crates till the apples go wrinkly.

To make tart filling either reduce in a sweet white wine or add honey before cooking, but lower the oven so the sugars dont caramelise.

Where do you think his head gasket has gone?

Cordialement,

:ok

Hello,

Oh and to drink with your pear tart:

An ice cold chablis if your doing tart on the terrace

Or as dessert to a full meal, why not a nice porto (port).

So , Tysoe did you whip it out at the weekend

Next step is to have both heads off and inspect for cracks between the valve seats, (rare), or (more common) crack between valve seat and plug thread.

Cordialement,

:ok

All this fruit talk!

Not 'whipped it out' yet :P

The weather was not good last weekend and i don't have the luxury of a work shop! Has to happen this weekend though as it needs to be up and running again by the end of the month and i need to make a shopping list yet!

Once i got the engine apart i'll get some pics of the heads for you to pass judgement

Update soon.
