hi,

wondered if someone could help.

in the water fill up bit behind the reg plate.

is it best to keep that filled up with a mixture of antifreeze and water or just water?

If a mixture is best - how much of each is advised? 50-50?

Thanks for any help!

Tim

A mix of 50/50 for sure. however, it should be a sealed system and not needing to be topped up. is this happening alot? if so i'd suggest a coolent leak either internal or external.
do you see any liquid on the ground? if yes, you might be able to trace it to its source. if no then it might be a head gasket...alot of white smoke from the exhaust?

hi - its not the main tank just the smaller one to the right of it.

no leaks that I can see - just a thirsty beast!

Thanks though - off to halfords!

As above.

As to coolant, the system holds 16ltrs, so 8 litres of water, 8 litres of antifreeze.

the smaller tank acts as an expansion tank when the coolent is too hot and is filled up by the system via the larger tank. as the system cools the coolent is drawn back to the larger tank and the rest of the system. in short it is all connected in some way.
if you can't see it it may also be that leaking coolent is contacting a heat source and evaporating.
i had a little leak too, caused by a loose clamp, collent would runn out, track along a pippe and drip onto an exhust pipe leaving no trace of a leak. it wasn't until i was under it having a good look that i saw the problem. two turns of the clamp and no more leaks. hope you have the same luck

Agree it shouldnt need topping up but i have a small leak due to my bodge up on the long coolent pipes.
