Got it off( what a tw*t of a job) found a leak smaller than the eye of a needle. I could see a film of gunk on the inside, only on the base. Filled with water and jet washed as much as I could, gave it a good shaking and that then emptied it. Back on tomorrow, with wifees help this time. Any hints or warnings about putting it back on. Can't be that hard....can it?

* The balance pipe that goes over the warm air pipe if Aircooled or the other pipework if water cooled is a pig to put on right!
* Check all the rubber grommets are all OK on both the tank and the filler neck are not perished
* I you have had the fuel sender off make sure you fit it back in the right way round and that it's sealed/has gaskets etc!
* Double check the tank top doesn't leak... pointless putting it back in to find at first full tank full it leaks
* I find jacking up the van a little to allow the tank straps to go on properly helped!

Why would the top of the tank leak? There's no holes or rust. Might the level guage leak? It's got a rubber gasket and it looks fine. gromets all look fine too. Mind you there was some serious "pooh" dirt collected all over the tank. 5lb less weight now.

The tops of the tanks on these buses are renowned for rotting through as they are a carp trap.. they rust through and leave tiny pins holes which then get bigger

ooooer! you filled it with water? hmmmmm you better be sure thats all out before refitting...just a few drops can cause havoc in your carb/injection.

it's diesel

Diesel...not quite as bad as the water will collect in the bottom of the fuel filter. (use the water leak off tap bottom of the filter, several times over the first few weeks). Hopefully by doing this any water will be drained off before causing any harm.

Ok so it's back on and no leaks. Cant believe such smalls holes let so much out.
Water in tank- drained it over night, then in the morning I used kitchen roll to soak up the left overs. Then I tied a large cloth to a stick and prodded it right into the tank corner that was on the floor. Pretty sure there wasn't a drop left.
As for fixing it back....nightmare to start. Working on my own and no experience of it before. I tried to reverse the removal procedures.......not a chance. I would recommend putting the back of the straps in their slots then rest the tank on them so the tank doesn't fall back all the way down. Also the breather pipe that is attached to the main filler pipe goes through the filler pipe hole in the chasis and not over, through a gap. It bent and nearly snapped that way. Oh and if you have trouble feeding it through, stop! Take it off at the grommet. The grommet is easy to put in whilst the tank is in place. Just feel for the hole and bend the grommet in half then insert into the hole. Then feed the pipe through and push it in the grommet. Much easier than trying to feed the thing through with it attached to the tank. As for the cross pipe, from left to right- it's not easy neither. I had to lie under the tank using my knees as jacks, hold it in place and feed it over the bigger pipes above, then into the right hand side connector. Hellova struggle because if it drops you have to start again. Oh and don't forget to put the level guage in before you raise tha tank, you wont be able to afterwards.
