For those at VF - I was very taken with the green syncro with the huge living unit attached. It had seen some use but the set up looked good for a round the world trip. I had a quick chat with the guy but if anyone knows his contact details i would love to talk more about that set up. In the meantime this is up for grabs again..

been discussed, especially the bad taste paint job, before but - does anyone know the history of the vehicle OR anyone who owns one of these conversions. I am interested, for research purposes only.

Also I didnt get time to meet him but i believe somebody mentioned a guy at VF with a syncro that he has taking RTW and writing about his adventures enroute, any ideas who or what? cheers

Various travellers run syncros, Kevin, wjo posts n here has written a book about their adventures, they've just been to the med Turkey etc...back for vanfest

if i had an awful lot of spare money, i would definitely have this in my collection:




i did also love the tischer demountables for the dokas. they are like rocking horse poo now and rarely in good nick even if you can find one.
plus i think they are a bit delicate for off roading.
before i got the westy, i was going to try to make my own tougher version for the doka based loosley on the tischer layout where there is an overhang at the back so there is room for a shower/toilet. they keep the profile low by having a pop up roof in the middle. mine was going to be of aluminium and grp foam sandwich construction.

the reason i went the westy route in the end was just so i could go off camping at the drop of a hat instead of having to convert a work truck into a camper before i could go anywhere.

the other bonus is that you can use the demountable on its legs, in the garden as a spare room or garden office etc when not in use and still use the truck for work.

Yeh, I camped next to him. He gave me the details of his blog so I could follow them on the way to China, it was a kind of tour with loads of motor homes and people in their 60's all driving around the place together.

Hotpod - some great pics , have you ever looked into constructing your own shell etc? The grey 16" with monster roof looks like the most practical and a home brew which gives me hope - any idea of the owner?

jes*b, i have no idea who owns it but i do like it.
i just delved a bit further and found a picture of it with the roof down. i like this design because it is excellent for security. i suspect you can also use it ( with a hard top transporter sort of height ) with the roof down, and then put it up when you want a bit more space and headroom ( and you arent worried about being broken into.)


i have given constructing my own shell a lot of thought, and will definately do it when i have more time and money. solution so far is aluminium frame and grp/foam sandwich panels. definately a luton bed. a hatch through from the doka cab, either through the rear window, or climb through the back sunroof into the luton. (some have a custom door cut into the back of the cab but i am inclined to keep the van as original as possible.)
the layout of the tischers is sweet. i havent come up with any better ideas. i know it can mess with the departure angle, but i do like them hanging over the back of the van giving room for a shower. ( lack of a seperate shower/toilet) would be my only reason for getting a bigger van for traveling). a massive hatch in the roof leading to the full length roof rack so you can use the roof for extra space, pitching a tent or sleeping under the stars.

looks like their construction is all the grp foam sandwich. screw the aluminium then.
it does look a bit dark and claustrophobic for my taste but thats nothing that cant be remedied with a door for instance, some more windows and that large roof hatch i mentioned.
