Failed MOT AGAIN! Advice Really Appreciated!!!

Hi All - So our beloved T25 1985 1.6 diesel high top Bertie has today failed its MOT on emissions. Everything else no problems at all (miracle lol), weve had Bertie six months - given him loads of TLC and bits done to the best of our ability. The idiot before really did not look after it. Our long term goal was to get him a 1.9 diesel engine when funds allowed. Anyway we drive into the MOT station today and the little tinker wouldnt start (should have seen the signs lol) anyway one big fail later we chuffed home, in silence, thoroughly depressed.

The mechanics advice is that the engine is shot (crank case compression as blowing oil out of the dipstick)?

So advice would really be gratefully received = should we try and get a reconditioned 1.6 until we can afford a 1.9? What are we looking at realistically?

we have seen reconditioned 1.9 diesels on the net for £1500 (collection fitting and return etc)?

What to do? What to do?!!!!
Any wise words would be fab.

Regards from Two Very depressed and upset Bertie Lovers lol (Debs & Kevin)

You could try giving it the old 'Italian tune-up' and then having it retested - basically rag the berries off it up and down the nearest bit of motorway for a while. Some say this helps with the emissions test. Also, I believe there's an additive of some kind you can pop in the tank to help with this.

Ours only got through last time because the chap kindly redid the test a few times until it passed. Seems like its pretty marginal for these old diesels, and a good revving helps!

Do you have the space to keep it of the road while you save up?

If you need a new engine pay the extra for a 1.9, after all a big part of the cost is fitting.

Don't bother with the 1.9 if it's an AAZ.
Stick a 2E or AGG motor.

My old 1.6 failed on emission so I drove it on the motorway giving it plenty then just before they re tested it I took out the air filter and filled the fuel filter with injector cleaner and it passed no problem which meant I could drive until I found a suitable 1.9 for it. :ok

fill the fuel filter with injector cleaner, as said take it for a good trashing, or might sound a bit mad but 2stroke oil works wonders 300ml per tank of derv quitens the pump and knock it also improves mpg use it in my t ransit E D I T not quick enough

Welcome to the club, ours failed on emissions too but it was the fault of a small hole in the manifold so an easier fix. Good luck with yours.

Aren't they the petrol gti engines?
I think that they're after an easy upgrade for a 1.6 diesel, converting to petrol would be a lot of work imho.

Thank you all for your advice and thoughts! Really really helpful and took on board.

We bought a new filter and a bottle of the additive stuff. Fitted and filled, thrashed the life out of it and IT STILL FAILED!!!!!! AAAGGGGGGHHHH The readings were down on last time. The first time they were over the six, fives etc the average of 8 readings came out of 4.83. This time every reading was four so it definately has helped but not enough to get an MOT on Bertie!!! Any other ideads would be gratefully received!!!

Many thanks again

Debbie

Take the air filter out completely, put something under the pedal to stop it being floored.

When was the air filter last changed?
If its clogged that will make it run rich.
If it does have crank case compression that isnt a good sign.
I had a 1,6d in my van and converted to a 1.9d aef motor for about £200 including the cost of my motor. :ok

Wind out the throttle stop on the fuel injection pump to limit the maxium rpm ....used to work on the old leylands I used to work on.

When mine failed on emissions, the bloke changed the oil too. Something to do with fumes from combustion deposits in the oil or somat. Not entirely sure what he meant. But it did make a big difference to the emission reading.
Can anyone explain? Providing it's not Bs that is:-)
