Intermittant ignition failure.

It seems once again my Caravelle GL Syncro is refusing to be sold with an intermittant ignition failure. I have taken the coil, leads, dizzy, dizzy cap and rotor fron my other bus which is running fine and it still will only start occationally and then cut out soon after. I also found a wire had fallen out of the ignition barrel but putting this back made no difference. I can't think what else to check, any idears please. Thanks, JJ.

Change the ignition switch is the first thing to do I would have thought, given that it has 20+ years of use.

Well I gave that a go with a spare ignition barrel which I had already tested on another bus but still nothing changed. Bit that's one more thing off the list. Thanks, JJ.

I've now run a cable from the battery to the live on the coil and it briefly started only to stop moments later and now won't start at all. JJ.

Well, once again I missed VanFest and by hook or by crook Bert the Syncro has avoided leaving home. I think all I can do now is put all the parts I changed over back on the correct vehicles and then try the Idle Stablisation Unit. If there is still no spark, then it's time to call in an auto electrition and the next time I'm getting him ready for sale, I'll tell him we're off to play at the seaside. JJ.

Yes but the hall sender is on the side of the dizzy and I took one off a running T25 to no avail. JJ.

I'm both happy and sad at the same time, because we found the fault on the electrics, Bert is up and running like a dream and I now have no excuse for not selling it. JJ.

Well, Uncle Hugh turned up with his vast knowledge of ford transits and proceeded to go through everything I had already done with a meter and moaning about German electrics. Having changed everything and cleaned everything else it started, then stopped two minutes later. After a fair bit of head scratching, Hugh did one of those special engineering things and thumped the amplifier unit which we had changed earlier, I turned the key and what do you know, it started. A bit of investigation under the rubber cover on the box connector revealed rather a lot of corrosion which we believe to be the sole cause of my dilemma, but having played around with so many other bits, we will never really know. Now I just have to sort out an awkward leaky pipe up by the gearbox and then it's M O T time. JJ.
