difficulty in getting gears after gear shift overhaul

Second gear has always been a bugger to get in when coming down the box so got the gear lever repair kit from brickwerks to see if it would help. Its was a 5 speed JX but now an AAZ so the link housing etc had to come off too. The swap over was a doddle but now its worse than before. I noticed a bit of wear on the shift guides but have seen much worse and also the nylon guides on the fork seem to be good too. First to second is no problem as is forth to fifth, second to third is pot luck, then coming back down fifth to forth no problem, forth to third or even forth to second is almost impossible. Gonna take it all apart again this morning and have another look. I might even get some picture up of the guides for opinions. Any suggestions?

Pictures as promised
Is it me or does the fork look a little out of shape? a little wide at the bottom than the top?
I took the link house off, removed the guides from the bottom, put the housing back on, took her for a spin and can get all the gears however its a bit of guesswork without them.
Also when changing up to second it feels as if the spring mechanism thing with the bellows on (sorry not sure of correct terminology) has to be shoved over like you would when selecting first before it will go in. Is this thing meant to slide in and out freely as when I had the gear stick off it seemed to take a bit of effort to press it in, sort of like a bit of resistance then freely goes in and returns no problem.
Gonna have a fettle with the ball and socket and see if I cant get a bit more clearance and see if that helps.
Any other suggestions gratefully appreciated.

I'm not sure about yours being 5 speed, but when I first had problems getting my 4 speed into 1st gear it was the splined extension shaft just in front of the hook(universal) coupling underneath the van which was set wrong.
It came loose one day & I found that when I connected it up when in 3rd gear it made gear selection much easier.
As I say mines a 4 speed 1.9 inj wbx, so it may be completely different. it's literally a 3 or 4 minute job.
Hope this helps.
