The time the glowplugs stay on for should depend on the resistance of the engine temperature sender in the flange at the back of the cylinder head. (By back, I mean the back of the engine, which, because the engine is back to front, is towards the front of the vehicle)
When the resistance is of the sender is high (ie a cold engine) the light should stay on longer. Up to 30 seconds in fact. So if your glowplugs stay on too long, it could be that the blue/white wire has come off the sensor, or the sensor has failed, or the earth connection through the aluminium flange to the engine is not made.
To test this, pull off the blue/white wire from the sensor, and connect it directly to the body of the engine. If you now get no glow at all, or a very short glow, your problem was one of the above. My bet would be a bad earth connection.
If the light still stays on for ages with the wire connected to the engine body, suspect the glow plug relay, which is inside the big black box on the bulkhead to the left of the engine. The only way to test really is to swap for a known good one.
Once you've been through these tests and still not found a problem, it's really down to checking that all the wiring is intact, with an electrical meter.
