Hi All

Hope I can tap the expansive knowledge of the community once again.

I am replacing the rear main oil seal (it was weeping), I have already dropped the gearbox and removed the Flywheel, before I order the required parts I have a couple of queries.

I should check and set the crank end float. Are the thrust shims available in different sizes, if so where from?
There is a bush/colllar inside the flywheel, having trouble finding a supplier for that, Is it still available?
The manual shows a washer plate between the 5 flywheel allen bolts and the flywheel itself, this is missing on my van. Can anyone confirm if this is normal?
Does anyone have an opinion on the quality of the crank Oil seals from suppliers? I'd like the best I can get, it seems VW no longer hold them.
Will a universal clutch alignment tool suffice? If not, any recommendations for an alignment tool?

Any reassembly tips welcome!

Hello,

Do not try to mess with the end float, do not remove the end float shims.

Get both seals, crankcase and flywheel, (o ring like silicon thing.)

Clean the inside of the bellhousing.

Easy to fit, my latest video in preparation, (changing seals)

While youve got the engine down, look at the starter motor oilite bearing. Also your clutch driven plate, if you've got a mechanical clutch now is a good time to look at the adjustment wing nut.

Universal alignment tool ok, vw input shaft is better.

Torque the clutch bolts correctly, preferably use 12 point spline socket caps.

Grease end of input shaft before fitting. Grease roller bearing in flywheel.

Easy job...

Checking the end float is often mentioned in other threads when dealing with a leaking crank seal, are you suggesting that it's not really an issue? or that it's not really worth the aggravation in finding and fitting the correct shims?
