Safety when welding on the van

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask some safety questions about welding on my van. It's it safe to weld straight on a van with a fuel tank as long as it's not near? Would you have to remove the tank if it was? Same for the gas tank (it's a westy with an underslung tank). Aside from removing flammable materials when grinding is there anything else to be aware of from a camper perspective?

Thanks,

Si

Remove anything remotly flammable within a fair radius of welding/grinding and make sure you have an extinguisher/bucket of water/fire blanket handy. As for welding near a petrol tank there are mixed views and it all depends on what proximity your are welding to a tank. :ok

and also wether diesel or petrol, the former pose few threats the latter more care required, keep away from under front arches, filler and usual spots,

Theres also a train of thought that battery should be disconnected. Welding current generally takes shortest route though so I wouldn't remove batt or tank just to weld a panel but you do need to be alert with respect to fuel lines.
