danbury electric roof gas strut assisted

Hello
First of all I would just like to say hello to you all and introduce myself. I have just joined the club and am very excited by the messages I have received so far in response to a problem I have. We bought a VW air cooled Danbury in May. It is in excellent condition but our roof which is risen using a motor via a worm drive (??) and assisted by gas struts is not working well. It seems to have a hard time lifting one end and so the worm drive misses pulling the wire through causing it to coil on the end that isn't lifting so well. In actual fact my husband has just informed me that the worm drive has broken off from the metal roller (via the metal bar) - the good side as well! Ahhhh! It must have put a great deal of strain on it.
The electrician in the family suggested we convert it to just gas struts. It seems a shame as the motor works well but now with the last bit of news it seems we can not save the set up unless anyone has ever come across this problem before?
Also, if we go towards gas struts has anyone ever changed from electric motor to gas struts for a Danbury Autoroof?
Thank you in anticipation
