Has anyone ever fixed a hole in the long front to rear metal coolant pipe with appropriate size hose and jubilee clips .I dont want to change whole pipe at the mo, just hacksaw the small leaking section and put a section of hose in ( 38mm diam i think ) instead .
any tips gratefully recieved.

Yep. I cut them back from the engine bay to just infront of the rear cross-member / outrigger to remove a holey section. So they don't droop onto the driveshaft I made a raceway from copper pipe of the required profile, bolted it to the engine bulkhead and the crossmember, and ziptied the hoses to it. I used hylomar on the joints to ensure they sealed and 2 jubilee clips each. Belt & braces!

Halfords stock ribbed reinforced wire flexi hoses .They come in various dia sizes aprox 500mm long with a ribbed mid section and two ends that can fit over the metal pipes.

Yep, me too :ok

Check the rest of the pipe though whilst doing it cause they are prone to corrode and go thin / weak in other areas too. (ask me how I know :? )

^ and check the upper surface of the pipe especially, even though you can't see it!! My hole was on the top, probably due to corrosive roadsalt & crap sitting undisturbed on the pipe for years.

Replace and forget. No danger of rubber bodge pipe popping off when sat in a jam on the motorway for an hour or so

Been there, done it, coolant on M6. Just my opinion :ok
