1.9 d overheating on motorways. ?????

it is fine around town but took it down the motorway for the first time since putting the 1.9n/a motor in to BVF, where the needle stayed right over and the light was flashing, with the old 1.6n/a in, it never did this, can only assume that there is a plumbing problem, when i got back onto slow roads again it was great. i needed to do a certain amount of guesswork with the water pipes as some of the originals didnt match the new engine/pump. anyone got any ideas or has anyone in the walsall- west brom- wolves area got a diesel van i can compare setups with ?? ps motorway speeds meant 56 mph only.

might be the main coolant pipes from front to back the wrong way round?

or blocked rad?

thanks for the diagram, its the pipes around the pump area that will be the problem, something is amiss. the rad is ok, well it should be !!!

louey, did you put the 1.6 pump on or leave the 1.9 on ? it appears i have an extra pipe (cant really see) the large one going into the block, is there a smaller one joining it just where it joins the block? i think the fault is around the pump area though, there are 3 pipes coming from it ???? dont know which pipes are pushing & which are recieving!! hoping to take the family too cornwall soon and dont need to drive there at 40mph !!!!!!!!!! well, i took the thermostat out altogether to try it, it takes longer to warm up and around town generally runs a lower temp, and down the autobahn it still gets hot but not as hot before.
i asked a mate "a fitter"who said it sounds like a crack is opening in the compression area when its under stress (cringe)

, he also said to add "K seal " to the coolant to "fix it" for good. it only reacts to air and will not coat the water jacket, rad etc like radweld... has anyone got an opinion on this ? can there be another less frightening reason for the high motorway temp?

eyup duck,i had to take the big plastic union off where the large pipe joins the block on the 1.9 as that had an extra pipe and also a big multiplug, but the 1.6 union is simply an ally single union,if you cant get sorted duck we will have to meet up somewhere and you can have a scant at mine duck,i think there were the same pipes coming out the back of the 1.6 pump and the 1.9 pump but i changed them to,match the 1.6 alternator,or if i write down what goes to where-would that do,i could stick me head in the hole and write it all down duck....regards

oldiguana, how did you put on your old alternator, thats what i was going to do but the 1.6 waterpump wont fit on the 1.9 block so you have to fit the 1.9 pump back on and the bracket for that wont take the 1.6 alternator so how on earth did you do that?

I used the 1.9 pump. I'm in most of the week if you want to pop over. I'd come over but I've made a mess of my back brakes and need to get the van to a garage to get them sorted

so not gonna drive it very far till then

yeah duck, its a bit closer than i am,but the waterpump does fit but i had trouble getting the alternator bracket to fit as the two waterpumps bolt up differently and some of the bolts are different, and the 1.6 bolts had a type of spacer incorporated in them to mount the alternator correctly,i also found that i had to change the crankshaft pulley also as they wouldnt line up,i could have avoided all this hassle i think by just changing the wires to accept the 1.9 alternator, but alas i am a much better mechanic than i will ever be electriciaan.if you cant get it sorted duck and you cant get over to look at one,i could always nip over one night in marladys car and give you an hour or two for the cost of a brew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..2 sugars and plenty of cow please, wunna be im marladys camper though cause i arent changing the gearbox till monday,if box goes well i could nip down in her later in the week to compare notes, will have to see how it goes me owd duck......regards
