DG temperature sensor confusion

Hi all.

There are 2 x temperature sensors on the thermostat housing on a 1.9 DG engine.

One is mounted on the side of the housing and one on the front.

I know the one on the front is connected to my dashboard temperature gauge, because, when I short out the connector on it, the gauge goes up to full scale.

Looking at ETKA has me even more confused.

Question = What does the one on the side of the housing do ?

.
.
.
.
btw - the reason I am fiddling is because my gauge never gets above about number 1 ( if it had a numbered scale, which of course it hasn't, but you know what I mean !! ) and I suspect, after testing as above, it is the sensor that is faulty.

the other one tell the carb heater wen to heat, and when not to bother......

if you replace either of them, make sure you get the clips that hold them in AND the seals or you'll be going back again!

BTW, thats a late water system, early WBX have different senders.

Thanks Steve ( Oh knowledgeable one :) )

Yep I would have got the clips and seal, but thanks for the reminder.

The flippin ETKA page for 86 DG's seems to show the temp gauge sensor as being mounted somewhere near the water pump ??

And re later type system, yep I think this van is a bit of a mongrel ( but mongrel dogs are healthier and live longer don't they :) )
