Speedo on my 1.9 water-cooled camper

Hi guys, not sure this is the right section for this but here goes. My camper has always seemed very fast, I mean it indicates fast. Truth is with the use of sat nav I am showing about 35% fast. Now that's not good as I either hold up a lot of traffic or ignore speed limits. Either way I need the problem sorted. Now I have been told that there is only a simple connection at both ends of the speedo cable so the fault must be in the head. I know that there are different head units available so am wondering if mine has been replaced at some point in the campers life with one someone had lying around that just happened to fit. Is there a code number or something that I can check and if so where is it and what should it be for my 1985 caravelle Devon camper. Just in case anyone has thought about this I have actually got standard wheel rims and tyres so it's not due to that. Here's hoping someone can help, cheers, Bob.

Thats so far out I'm wondering if someone has replaced the original MPH with a european KMH and swapped the facias? or something along those lines.
The common head for the wasserboxer is the 805 (the number right at the bottom under the odometer) it stands for the number of turns per mile on the gearing? something like that....sorry it's not a precise answer.
But as the head is rotated mechanically off the N/S/F wheel I would have thought this can only be the speedo head fault.

The needles are only a friction fit on the shaft. Mine was out but not as much as yours. Not sure what the problem is with yours or why it is so far out. I just held the shaft with a small pair of long nose pliers at 57MPH and gently rotated the needle back to point at 50MPH. Its just a couple of MPH higher than my satnav now. Mind you, I did have a spare dash just in case I damaged or screwed the speedo needle.

Thanks for that guys, it confirms my own thoughts. I will check the number as suggested and I kind of hope it's way wrong. At least that way I have found the cause, then all I need is the right, one which is probably the easy part.

Hi again, I have just checked and the speedo is an 805, at least that's what is on the front facia of it. For now I have made a tape strip on the sunvisor with corrections but I will try to get another head at Vanfest in September. Is swapping the head an easy job for a podgy fingered old muppet like me or would I be best getting a garage to change it? Cheers, Bob.

Hi, I might have a go but would a wrong needle position not just give a speedo reading that was say 10 mph wrong right across the speed range rather than increasingly wrong the faster I go?
