leaking rear brake cyclinder

Not having much luck here really. Not sure if you saw my last post where I got to Lyon and broke a wheel bearing. Well now I have got to Nice and the rear left brake cylinder seems to have given up the ghost and has started leaking.

Any ideas why this may have happened? Not had the wheel off to inspect yet as just noticed it now. If I can get a new cylinder sent to me is this a job I can do myself? If not does anyone know a decent garage in the Nice area?

Worried so much about the engine getting through this trip and that has run like a dream but everything else is braking.

The brake cylinders are pretty easy to do .The hardest part I found way removing the drum lots of patients required as mine was a bit rusted on.As to why did it happen?...how old is the cylinder? just time to go I would guess..hope this gives you confidence as its pretty straight forward. Hope you get the bits. :ok

Very easy to do as mentioned above, if the brakes aren't self adjusting and the gap is between shoe and drum this can also cause a cylinder to go.

Chock wheels
Handbrake off
Jack van
Remove offending wheel
Remove ten mm bolts on drum (if fitted)
Try and remove drum a few gentle taps with a hammer
If not luck look behind back plate and look for small circular hole,
Put little finger in hole feel for a rachet gear
Lever up with a dmall screwdriver see if brake locks on, feel stupid and rachet down till loose
Remove drum
Clamp brake pipe using mole grips and a rag as not to damage pipe
Undo brake pipe from the back of cylinder, do not bend pipe.
Remove bleed nipple
Remove bolts holding cylinder on back plate
Remove cylinder

Fitting on reverse

Bleed brakes
Adjust brakes up correctly
Cup of tea and a smoke feel proud of yourself for achieving, wife will be happy you can travel and you may get lucky knowing your very manly and good at spannering.

Hope that helps
Phil

Hi

I live just down the road form nice, near Antibes. There is a firm in France you can order online from as below link combiT3, maybe they can get the part to you if that helps if needed. Or there is a local mechanic english guy who used to work for the AA for years he maybe able to help you out too. his number and website is as below link

http://riviera.angloinfo.com/forum/ccde ... CCID=34639

and VW T25 guys in France maybe try below link if you need parts

http://www.combit3.com/public/?page=boutique

If you do decide to do the job yourself and you need a hand or soemthing can try to help i have a few tools not many mind and not a mechanic but sometimes helping hand is good. My mail is pandbob@yahoo.co.uk.

thinking you could even use the site below angloinfo.com is a kind of expat site for the area but list lots of mechanics spares shops etc which may help you out to. If on the link below you click on france then french riviera lots of info may help out on there to.

Hope it may help a little

Cheers and enjoy the sun at least and have acold beer

Hey well good luck, and suprisingly I live in Biot just up the hill from you, how bizarre so not to far away if you need a hand but of course i have to work weekdays in Antibes so will be cycling past you tomorrow morning, but free at the weekend. Least if I find out our T25 is missing bits I know where they have gone lol. Enjoy les embrums we will oddly be camping round the corner on camping du Pylone by the fair in a weeks time. not far for us to go lol but got friends coming over staying on there. Enjoy a beer and hopefully you can get some sleep even with all the noise fo the fair and the seal lions at marineland. what type of van you got??

Good luck

Andy
