Thinking of buying a WESTFALIA camper,it is a '79 model, it has the 2.2 Subaru motor, fitted by TSR a few years back the owner spent around £7k on engine, gearbox and heating system, it needs to have a new clutch bearing replaced, owner says there is a noise coming from the clutch, he thinks it is thrust bearing,it has the upated 'box, are they good on clutches, don't want to have to replace to often, spoke to the guys at TSR they seemed really helpfull, and said it would be motor out and be around £300. (read some not so good feedback on this company, but to be fair, the guy seemed super helpfull on the phone, and was happy to give me loads of info, on the phone for around twenty minutes)
A VW garage, where my friend works says not to buy the bus just for the conversion, he says if the bus is good, buy it, sell the motor and adoptor and stick with an Aircooled motor, which I have a spare from a bus I had before, do I stick with Aircooled, try Surbaru or leave this well alone, any help on this matter will be cool.

thanks

Firstly. .Hello, welcome to the forum.

Like anything else, if you're uncertain don't buy it, It's your money to waste or invest.

At the end of the day its an old camper 20 years past its scrap date :)

hi,
what you have got to remember is, that if you go with this ( or any other non standard) van, you wont be able to get stock parts, you will always be struggling to get the parts you need, most from struggling to identify what s been used, changed and altered.
The subaru conversion is however far better than any of the inline conversions, there are a few about, but they do seem to change hands quite soon after conversion.

The only thing i will say is, if you intend to stay with aircold, DO NOT DRIVE THE SUBARU.- you'll never want a CU after!
you would be better buying a aircold that hasnt been messed with.

My air-cooled gets about 18mpg on a good run, top end of 70mph (downhill), left the factory with about 70bhp and hasn't got anymore powerful!

Just saying.

The Subaru might get there quicker, but the CU just sounds better.

Eh?
So Newquay sounds like an EJ 22. .. Odd

Subaru liked the flat four that VW developed
So they took it into the future.
