Typing this from my phone by the side of the road, looks like my sump nut has fallen out and there is no oil in my engine. I might have been lucky but I now desperately need to know what size plug I need and can I get it from halfords? rha only place likely to be open! also which oil? thanks. Aargh.

Thanks all. No luck at halfords, will have to get up early and find one in Bristol before the tragic warden gets there!

I'd also go with some ptfe tape or some kind of chemical metal/sealant - from the point of view that how did the plug just fall out in the first place? threads could be gone, worth keeping in mind if you're back and forth the vehicle and against time, them wardens are well sneaky buggers!
good luck

total saga but looking like I might be on the home straight. Got up at 8.30 and my girlfriend stayed in van while I visited every one of Bristol's motor factors looking for the right thing, turns out they don't like it if you can't quote your reg number, no traffic warden though, typical! Ended up at the dealer who didn't have one and then a vw dub specialist further out of town who did. Anyway, that didn't fit but the specialist told me that the sump might have been drilled in the past. So I phoned the previous owner, it's a 1.6D sump, got the right plug for that, still too small, aaargh! Back to Halfords and measured it up by eye figuring I didn't have much to lose, bingo!

Now I've put about 4 litres of oil in but nothing is showing on the dipstick, does the oil go straight to the sump or do I need to wait until it works it's way through? Or do I need more that 4 litres? I assume it's pretty empty as it had stopped dripping out of the hole.

What dipstick have you got in?
If 1y it will now be too short.

I'm not sure, but I've checked the oil before and it's shown on the dipstick so I hope it's long enough.

4 litres should be plenty if you have not removed the filter and it should show on the dipstick, unless it is not the original one.
