Fuel pump running problem.

HI Folks the camper cut out on Monday whilst driving.. Fuel gauge said 3rd full which was right as we'd put more than enough petrol in 2 days prior. Any way got a can of fuel to make sure and it started fine.
I put 2 more gallons in on way home as well.
Then lunch time today I went out and drove aprox 4 miles and it conked out leaving a fence panel store. Fuel Gauge said plenty and I had done no more than 10 since topping up. Any way called the wife out and put another gallon in. This time it didn't start.
There's plenty of fuel coming out of the tank but not reaching the carb. The RAC came out and put an in line pump and up it came and started ok. But no increase when accelerating. I managed to get home but when I went to start it an hour later I had the same problem.
All pipes flow fine.
I can only guess the pump is knackered and yet its only a year and half old from GSF. I also had a replacement cam bar at the same time.
I took the pump off the engine with fuel inlet still attached and tried pushing the rocker to see if it did pump fuel up but no fuel came through.
I did notice that the gasket was the wrong one looking at the Haynes manual. The garage had fitted the open one for attaching the block the pump sits on to the engine. Haynes shows a almost solid one to sit on the block and the pump sits on top with just a hole for the cam bar and the screw holes. Would this make a difference.
Luckily I still had the GSF box with the old pump in and lo and behold the correct gasket was in it so on it went.
Any way i left the in line hand pump on and pumped fuel up and hey presto it's going again but for how long? should i get another pump as it does sound worn out. Its like the fuel is going back down the pipe towards the tank? The camper has been sluggish lately that's for sure no poke at all.
Any comments and advice gratefully received.
